Did you know that the FDA has placed an import alert on all alcohol-based hand sanitizers from Mexico? The daily need for hand sanitizer has grown exponentially over the last year due to the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and increased focus on washing your hands or using a hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable. The FDA has in turn devoted considerable attention to making sure that safe hand sanitizer products are widely available. To make sure hand sanitizers are safe, the FDA has prioritized product inspections and public awareness of unsafe products to prevent the distribution and use of contaminated or low-quality products. The FDA announcement explains the import alert is due in part to the fact that from April to December of 2020, 84% of tested hand sanitizers from Mexico were found to be unsafe most commonly due to contamination. One of the most common contaminants was methanol. Methanol is not allowed in hand sanitizer because it can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and fatal if ingested.
