Helpful Food Label Design Tips

While the quality of your food product is important, a great package label can be what first attracts customers to your product. There are more than 40,000 items for sale at the grocery store, so your package really needs to stand out. We’ve listed a few helpful tips to consider when you are designing your food labels.

One of your first steps should be market research. Decide whom your main audience will be and who is most likely to be buying your product. Then design to attract that buyer. Take a look at the package design of other similar products and make notes about what works and what doesn’t.

A cluttered design can be confusing to customers. A potential customer needs to be able to look at your product package and instantly understand what is inside. They need to have instant product identification and instant brand identification. Simplicity is usually the best way to go, and if you browse through images of some of the best package design ideas, you will see that the designs are simple and straightforward.

If your package design includes a picture of your food product, be sure that what’s inside the box looks like the picture on the box. For example, if you are selling chocolate chunk cookies and the pictures shows a large cookie with many chunks of chocolate, your customer won’t be happy if your cookies are small and don’t contain that much chocolate.
